The BENCH
As a designer, it's always exciting to tackle a new project, especially when it's a commission. This particular project was for a bench to fit in an entryway space, but it came with a few challenges. The space was a small hallway offshoot with two doors, one for a coat closet and the other for a washer and dryer. Therefore, the bench had to be functional and useful without being too large to obstruct the doors.
To meet these requirements, I came up with a unique design that would require no fasteners, only glue and friction to hold it together. The bench was made entirely of 3/4" plywood, laminated together to create the required thickness. The legs were joined together using an interlocking geometry that not only provided rigidity but also added to the aesthetics of the piece.
While the design may seem simple, it was far from it. The geometric leg design required precision cutting and alignment, ensuring that each piece fit perfectly. The result was a beautiful and functional bench that met the client's needs while also adding a touch of design elegance to their space.
Overall, this project was a success, and I was proud to have created a piece that not only met the client's requirements but also demonstrated the power of creative thinking and precision craftsmanship.
